A brief history of the area

Ashley is part of Pinetown which began in 1850 when it was named after the governor of Natal, Sir Benjamin Pine. The suburb of Ashley is also filled with some history of its own and one of its notable schools, Ashley Primary School, celebrated its Diamond Jubilee (60 years) in 2016. The area's local cemetery, Ashley Cemetary, is a resting place for many of Pinetown's ancestors, with graves going back as far as 1897.

Distance from key points

Residents of Ashley are able to reach King Shaka International Airport via the N2 within approximately 34 minutes (47,1 km). Durban Beach is 25,1 km (24 minutes) away via the N3 and The Pavilion is a mere 13-minute drive (12,5 km).

Ashley's climate is generally warm with an average annual high temperature of 25.6 ºC. The area experiences an average annual low temperature of 20.3 ºC and sees roughly 110.03 mm of rain each year, with January being the wettest month.

Schools in the area

One of the reasons families choose to live in Ashley is the great schools on offer in the area.  Some of the top schools include Kokkewiet Pre-Primêre Skool, Honeybeez Pre-School and After Care, Stepping Stones Montessori School, Ashley Primary School, Benjamin Pine Primary School. 

The best high schools are Pinetown Boy's High School and Pinetown Girls' High School.

Combination schools such as Gelofte Skool, Highway College and St Benedict School are excellent and all within a short distance.

The Browns School, which caters for autistic and special needs children, is also situated nearby and is an absolutely brilliant school.

Healthcare in the area

When it comes to healthcare, you can have peace of mind knowing that there is a great hospital, Life The Crompton Hospital located within the area. Other nearby hospitals such as Life Westville Hospital and St Mary's Hospital are also options for you and your loved ones.

As Ashley is predominantly a residential suburb, it may not have loads of restaurants within the suburb itself but there are some wonderful options nearby worth a visit such as Kwethukuhle & Zhamorano's, The Braai Guru, Potluck Restaurant and Pedros Flame Grilled Chicken.
