Pinetown is a larger area that is part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, inland from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. A brief history of the area

Pinetown is rich in history and began in 1850 when it was named after the governor of Natal, Sir Benjamin Pine. During the Second Boer War, the British built a concentration camp in Pinetown to house Boer women and children. A number of German settlers made Pinetown their base and this accounts for the neighbourhood known as New Germany and the German Lutheran Church. To this day imported German cakes and goodies pack the shelves at Christmas time in the Knowles Spar, the largest grocery store in Pinetown.

Residents of Pinetown are able to reach King Shaka International Airport via the N2 within approximately 34 minutes (47,1 km). Durban Beach is 25,1 km (24 minutes) away via the N3 and The Pavilion is a mere 13-minute drive (12,5 km).

The climate in Pinetown is generally warm with an average annual high temperature of 25.6 ºC. The area experiences an average annual low temperature of 20.3 ºC and sees roughly 110.03 mm of rain each year, with January being the wettest month.

Schools in the area

When it comes to schools in the area, residents have no problem selecting the right one for their children as there are many great schools to choose from. Some of the top primary schools in the area include John Wesley School, Pinetown Junior Primary School, Pinetown Senior Primary School and Benjamin Pine Primary School.

High schools you should consider are Pinetown Boys' High School and Pinetown Girls' High School.

Combination schools such as Gelofte Skool, Highway College and St Benedict School are excellent and all within a short distance.

Pinetown is also home to the acclaimed The Browns School which caters for autistic and special needs children.

You won't need to worry about being in a pickle when it comes to healthcare in Pinetown as the area has its own amazing hospital known as Life The Crompton Hospital. Life Westville Hospital is also a short 13-minute drive from the Pinetown area.
