Scottsville at a glance

Scottsville is a leafy neighbourhood located south-east of Pietermaritzburg's city centre. This beautiful residential neighbourhood is bordered by rivers and has a canal flowing through it, providing residents with plenty of green space.

Students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Pietermaritzburg Campus are fond of Scottsville. There is a lot of student activity in shopping malls and sports parks, and the city centre of Pietermaritzburg is only a few minutes walk away.

Many modern homes with lush gardens, as well as Victorian-style buildings, can be seen throughout the neighbourhood. In addition, student housing and apartments are in great demand in the neighbourhood.

A brief history of the area

Scottsville was open grassland just over a century ago, with animals ranging all the way down to the Msunduzi River. Travellers from Durban to Pietermaritzburg utilised the region as a rest stop, with ox carts and, subsequently, stagecoaches passing through.

The two-acre plot of land was included in Pietermaritzburg in the early 1900s, and Connaught Road was one of the first roads created in Scottsville.

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)

Driving from Pietermaritzburg Airport to Scottsville via Oribi Rd takes around seven minutes in typical traffic and covers a distance of approximately 3.3 kilometres. The CBD of Pietermaritzburg will take you around six minutes to reach.

Scottsville is 100 kilometres from King Shaka Airport. In normal traffic, this trip will take you around 90 minutes.

Climate

The climate in Scottsville is warm and temperate. The rainfall in Pietermaritzburg is significant, with precipitation even during the driest months. February has the hottest average temperature of 20.6 °C, while July has the coldest average temperature of 11.9 °C.

Schools in the area

Scottsville Primary School was the first school to be built in the neighbourhood. Scottsville Government School, as it was originally known, was founded on its present site in 1915. The school started the year with 43 pupils.

Many prominent schools have left their mark in the area, generating a long list of outstanding pupils. Pietermaritzburg Girls' High, St Anne's, St Charles, Epworth, and Maritzburg College are among these schools.

Students attend the Durban University of Technology's Pietermaritzburg Riverside Campus in Scottsville in addition to the University of KwaZulu-Pietermaritzburg Natal's Campus.

Healthcare in the area

If you want medical attention in Scottsville, you can go to the Scottsville Clinic. Other amenities nearby include Netcare St. Anne's Hospital, Midlands Medical Centre, and Southgate Medical Centre.

On campus, there is also a clinic for students.

Shopping centres

Scottsville Mall is the ideal place to go for all of your shopping requirements. The mall is home to major banks, restaurants, fashion outlets, health and beauty shops, and much more. It is anchored by national merchants Checkers and Food Lover's Market and has unique services such as Just Gym.

There is an abundant basement and open-air parking, both of which are supervised by security guards.

Restaurants

Scottsville features a few restaurants that will satisfy your taste buds whether it is a romantic night, a family night, or if you are just searching for a delicious lunch. Rockafellas Theatre of Food, Vigour & Verve, Rocca Mama's, Spur, and even John Dory's are among them.

Special attractions

Scottsville has many attractions suitable for the young and old. Whether you are visiting for a day or live in the lovely suburb, you will always have entertainment at your doorstep.

Horseback riding is a popular sport in Pietermaritzburg, and there are several riding facilities in the area. The Canterbury Equestrian Centre is next to a neighbouring nature reserve, while the Ashburton Pony Club is further away. Scottsville Racecourse provides a fantastic day of horse racing. This arena hosts race meets on most Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Golden Horse Casino, located close to the Scottsville Racecourse, is the ideal location for events, entertainment, and enjoyment. The complex features wonderful restaurants as well as activities for children of all ages. There's even an educational centre with babysitters for the little ones, a science and exploration centre, and video games.
