Orania, Orania

Orania is a town situated in the Northern Cape province, 164 kilometers from Kimberley 240 kilometres from Bloemfontein.  It is situated on the banks of the Orange River and surrounded by extended areas of the great Karoo.

Orania offers an example of the 'traditional' Afrikaner way of life and also demonstrates the ingenuity of a marginalized community with advanced irrigation techniques, implemented in close co-operation with pioneers in Israel, the only fully organic vineyards in Southern Africa and a sophisticated dairy farm, and the cultivation and export of Pecan nuts.  This small community also has their own radio station and its own currency, the Ora.

Orania is in every aspect a "green town" with friendly locals, excellent schools and facilities, interesting tourist attractions and a growing number of businesses that cater for most needs.

Orania boasts exceptional sunsets and at night those interested in astronomy can indulge themselves in an unpolluted and clear night sky.

Orania has a characteristic architecture, with among others, several buildings built with straw.  There's also the Cultural History Museum which includes a collection of firearms, some dating back to the 18th Century.
