Ladismith, in the Western Cape, traces its origins to 1852 when Elandsvlei farm was designated as a town. It gained municipal status in 1862 and was named in honour of Lady Juana María Smith, wife of Sir Harry Smith, a British colonial figure. The spelling was Ladismith to differentiate it from Ladysmith in Natal. The town received local government in 1862 and became a municipality in 1903. Ladismith thrived as an agricultural and trading hub, boasting Cape Dutch architecture.
