Hilton at a glance

Hilton is a small town that is rich in history and situated near the city of Pietermaritzburg in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Only 10 km from the start of the acclaimed Midlands Meander, many flock to the area to experience its natural beauty, excellent schools and vibrant community. The tree-lined streets and 'garden city' appeal make this a stunning area to live in whether you're part of a family or looking to retire. Various property types call Hilton home and so you can be sure you'll find exactly what you're looking for.

A brief history of the area

Hilton received its name from a woman called Jane Henderson who was married to Joseph Henderson, a farming pioneer in Pietermaritzburg, in 1849. It is believed that Jane was nostalgically thinking of Hilton Park in her native Staffordshire when they first named their farm Hilton in 1860. The farm adjoined Philip Zietsman's Voortrekker farm, named 'Groenekloof' and was used as access to the early wagon routes.

The earliest record of Europeans in the Hilton area goes back to the early 19th century when transport riders travelled into the hinterland over World's View, making overnight stops at Ketelfontein, Sedgley and The Knoll at Winterskloof.
