Observatory, also known as Obs by the locals, is a mere few minutes away from Cape Town city centre. Observatory residents are an eclectic mix of academics, professionals, students, bohemian artists and young starter families.
The suburb is named after the Royal Observatory which was founded in 1820, and is still operational and open to the public for tours. Its central location allows easy access to all major roads and attracts residents who do not want a long commute to the city.
Rich in character Victorian architecture, Obs is home to many beautiful old buildings including the famous Groote Schuur Hospital where the world’s first heart transplant took place.Observatory has many churches, soccer and hockey facilities, as well as a public swimming pool.The vibrant restaurant and pub night life in Lower Main road is a favourite with the many University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Medical School students who live in the area.
