• Location:
Wolkberg Farms is situated in Levubu, a valley in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, in the Soutpansberg Mountains, not far from the Zimbabwe border.
• Agricultural profile:
It is a large-scale, mixed subtropical fruit and nut farm. Their major crops include:
- Avocados (they export a large portion)
- Bananas
- Macadamias
• Packaging / Processing:
Wolkberg Farms operates three packhouses — one each for avocados, bananas, and macadamias. They manage the packing process for these fruits, with export in mind.
Their avocado fruit is marketed under a brand called Avodene.
• Seasons & Market Timing:
Avocado season usually runs from early February through May, though starts can be delayed depending on climatic conditions.
They are known in some years to be “first on the market” with avocados.
Bananas are harvested green for local consumption and then sent to ripening facilities.
• Water & Climate:
After dry years, the area has had significant rainfall since February, which has helped streams and water sources. Water is important for their orchards.
Being in a subtropical valley, Levubu is known for fertile soils and relatively favourable climate for fruit and tropical nut cultivation.
• Export & Quality:
Avocados: Around 90% of their class 1 avocados are exported via Westfalia Marketing.
They delay packing some fruit to ensure proper oil content and moisture before shipping — i.e. quality control is taken seriously.
