Winter wonderland: 5 V&A Waterfront activities to enjoy

Category News

The snow made a glorious appearance in the Western Cape last weekend. You may be tempted to retreat indoors with a cup of hot chocolate. Don't. If you're in Cape Town, this is the time when the city really shines.

Winter in Cape Town

Kill your inner cynic. That viral Cape Winter Song video has it right. In the chilly season, Cape Town has so many epic advantages.

  • Quieter: No crowds. No lines. Less noise.
  • Sun relief: Just mild, cool weather.
  • Green: With all the rain, Cape Town's mountains and fields come alive.
  • Affordable: Expect more specials from restaurants, tour operators and hotels.
  • Sea spotting: The whales make their appearance.
  • Fun: Glühwein instead of piña coladas? Fireplaces over flower-picking? It's still a good time.

The charm of Cape Town's winter is just as appealing as the summer. At the V&A Waterfront, you can make the most of it.

1. Explore Two Oceans Aquarium

You're drawn to water for a reason. It has a therapeutic effect on your body that you will appreciate in winter. You'll feel calmer, less stressed and enjoy lower blood pressure with every moment at this aquarium. There are interesting exhibits to keep your mind active. You can also catch a feeding session led by an in-house expert. A penguin encounter is always a pleasure. If you're lucky, one of them will even hop onto your lap.

2. Ride The Cape Big Wheel

Has the icy "North Wester" wind got you down? Perk up and explore the city in comfort. The Cape Big Wheel boasts a 360° panoramic view of Cape Town. In an enclosed cabin, you'll go up 40 metres above ground in a four-revolution journey. It's a feel-good trip in more ways than one. A part of your ticket fee is donated to the Give for Good Foundation. Something else that will put a smile on your face: If you were a winter baby, you get to ride for free on your birthday.

3. Visit Chavonnes Battery Museum

The Chavonnes Battery Museum is an explosion of art and culture. At a time where you might feel dull, go here to add vibrancy to your life. The Chavonnes Battery was a fortification protecting Cape Town during the early 18th century. Now it's a museum featuring exhibitions, artefacts and photo displays. A highlight is taking its V&A Waterfront Historical Walking Tour. This is an opportunity to travel back in time and see how the V&A became what it is today.

4. Have fun at the Scratch Patch

This is the best place to see and buy gemstones in Cape Town. If you believe in their healing properties, why not grab some rose quartz or amethyst to boost your mood. The Scratch Patch is also home to the Cave Golf mini course. When you're not up for the crisp waves of Cape Town's beaches, this is the perfect way to get in some exercise.

5. Head to Robben Island

With Nelson Mandela Day coming up, take the opportunity for a Robben Island tour. The ferry departs from the Nelson Mandela Gateway. The tour takes you to important historical sites like the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe's house and concludes with a viewing of Nelson Mandela's cell. Without the crowds and scorching sun of the December/January peak season, it's a more pleasant experience.
