Tips for moving with pets

Category News

Our pets often struggle more than we do with the stress of moving. Here are a few tips to assist your furry companions with a smooth transition to a new home.

Animals don’t welcome change and prefer a stable, permanent environment but one sure factor in reassuring your pets when faced with a move is your affection and attention. It’s important to try to remain calm around your animals to let them know that everything will be okay and that they are safe and loved.

To keep stress levels down, don’t leave packing until the last minute. Pack everything up over a long period of time to get your pet used to the idea and to keep your anxiety to a minimum.

Make sure that you keep all of your pets’ food, water bowls, medication and special toys handy on moving day.

You can opt for a family member or friend to babysit your dog on moving day or, especially in the case of cats, keep them locked away in a quiet room with everything they need. Be sure to check on them periodically throughout the day. Pets should ideally be moved to your new home once the back and forth moving trips are complete.

When you are ready to drive your pet over to your new home, make sure that you have any special carriers ready for safe transportation.

It’s important that you prepare your new home for the arrival of your pet, surrounding them with familiar things to ensure their comfort and security.

In the case of cats, make sure that they first become acclimatized to your new home until you allow them to explore the neighbourhood. You should keep them inside for at least two weeks until you gradually introduce them to their new surroundings.

Give your animals lots of treats and attention so that they associate pleasure with their new home and don’t feel the need to wander off.
