Fun Safari tractor tour on the farm

What better way than a special tractor trip with your safari guide to enjoy the thrill of being at an ostrich farm. You will have the chance to drive through and get close to the ostrich breeding sites in Zimbabwe and South Africa. As you observe ostriches reproducing in the wild during the breeding season, the Safari Guides will describe the ostrich's natural breeding cycle. Additionally, you will see rare White Ostriches and Kenyan "Red" ostriches. The emus, the second-largest bird, may also be spotted.

You can see what ostrich eggs look like after carving and decoupaging in an interactive section as well. You may learn about the goods manufactured from ostrich leather and touch, feel, and smell some ostrich leather throughout the tour. Even the history of ostrich farming during the Feather Boom more than a century ago as well as current farming techniques will be covered.

A brief history of the Safari Ostrich Farm

With the intention of enlightening and entertaining visitors about ostriches and agricultural methods, Derek Fisch and Harry Lipschitz invited the public to the Safari Ostrich Farm in 1956 in the lovely town of Oudtshoorn. Both families are still carrying on this history today by operating as commercial ostrich farmers and tourist attractions.

Facts about ostriches

The biggest living bird in the world, the ostrich, is a member of the rare order of birds known as the Ratitae, or running birds. Ostriches are real dinosaurs since fossilised ostrich skeletons from more than 120 million years ago have been found.

The mature ostrich may weigh up to 15 kilos and stands 2 to 3 metres tall, occasionally even more. Ostriches may live between 30 and 70 years, yet one was seen in Oudtshoorn and survived to be a ripe old age of 81.

With a fully grown bird capable of reaching speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour, the ostrich is renowned as the fastest creature on two legs. What is astounding about ostriches is the fact that they can sustain that amazing pace for 10 to 20 minutes.
