South African Astronomical Observatory

Category News

The South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) was established in 1972 and is the national centre for optical and infrared astronomy in South Africa.

SAAO promotes and conducts research in astronomy and astrophysics by providing a world-class facility to scientists and sharing research findings and discoveries.

In order to further promote astronomy and astrophysics in South Africa SAAO offers you the opportunity to learn more about the wonders of space by visiting their headquarters in Observatory. On the second and fourth Saturday of every month SAAO is open to the public for 45 minute presentations in the auditorium.

The programme includes an introduction to the McClean telescope, the observatory museum and the observatory building itself. Depending on the weather, the McClean and other telescopes are set up for visitors to view objects in the night sky.

SAAO also inspires and educates thousands of learners every year by hosting school groups and conducting outreach programmes. SAAO offers star-gazing at schools and works with teachers by getting learners involved in science exhibitions such as SciFest and Techno X.

Visit their official website to find out what the topic of the next presentation is and to organize a visit for your school.
