Ride the wave at Wavecrest Surf School

Category Area Focus

Some say there is no better freedom than being immersed in the vast blue waters of the ocean. Those rising waves and crashing shorelines evoke an energy that's unmatched on land. Nestled in the heart of Jeffreys Bay is the Wavecrest Surf School. Dedicated to teaching amateur surfers the tricks to staying afloat, this institution is providing one-on-one attention at reasonable prices.

Background of the school

The school has been operational since 2005 and has helped many hopefuls become comfortable in the water and gain confidence in their surfing abilities. Run by Andrew and Libby Moon and their team, the lessons are fun, informative and move at a pace the student can handle.

Jeffreys Bay is world-renowned for its beautiful beaches and laid-back holiday lifestyle. Wavecrest Surf School capitalises on this sought-after location by providing the resources to learn a skill that helps one to take full advantage of being in the area.

Begin your lessons

Dipping your toes into the salty water is a breeze. There are daily surfing lessons available at 10 am and 2 pm. You can also choose to begin early with the 07:30 am slot by prior arrangement. Private lessons and intermediate-level training are also available per agreement. The lessons last two hours at a time and you will be provided with a surfboard and a wetsuit.

There is also a 7-day learn-to-surf package where you get a crash course in everything you need to know to master the art of surfing. This includes a lesson for every day and a board and wetsuit will be provided at your disposal during your stay. You can expect to learn the ABCs of surfing during your lessons. This includes:
  • Safety techniques
  • How to catch a wave
  • Balancing on your board
  • Standing on your board

This step-by-step process ensures you feel up to the challenge of tackling even the biggest of Jeffreys Bay's waves.

Join the seashell movement

When you need a break from catching waves and basking in the sun, make a stop at the Shell Museum. This landmark is home to over 600 species of the finest seashells and is one of the largest displays in South Africa. It attracts tourists and shell enthusiasts from all over the globe. The shells have grown to this impressive number largely due to the efforts of local collector Charlotte Kritzinger. Her collection, along with donations and exchanges from other collectors have grown the Shell Museum into the popular site it is today. You can choose to pop in and experience a guided tour from a knowledgeable shell expert and enjoy discovering the sample shells that are handed out. There are also shells available to buy from the many shops and stalls surrounding the museum and along the main beach.

The Shell Museum aims to incorporate more of the local history with artefacts from the first fishermen in the area and the general history of the town. With a new collection of micro shells on display, the museum is set to have a busy holiday season.
