Making your new house a home fast

Category News

Have you recently moved? You're probably not feeling as 'at home' as you thought, and that's understandable.

Most buyers will tell you that settling in takes time. But there are some simple ways to speed up the process of making yourself at home.

Steve van Wyk from Seeff Centurion offers the following tips:

-          If there was anything that you negotiated with the previous owner to do like removing fixtures or repainting the walls, ensure that this is done before you move in.

-          Remove the “For Sale” board in front of the house if it has not been done yet.

-          If you own a pet, go for a walk with your dog or walk through all the rooms with your cat. By doing this both you and your furry friend can discover your new surroundings together. Consider adopting a pet if you don’t have one – they instantly make everything feel more homely.

-          Determine where the closest supermarket, pharmacy, hairdresser and doctor are located.

-          Unpack family pictures early on – even if you just stack them up against the wall until you know where you want to hang them this will also help you to feel more settled and less overwhelmed. Home is where the heart is!

-          Unpack your bedroom and the kitchen first and don’t forget to make sure that you have the correct curtains for both these spaces. You need to eat, you need to sleep and you need some privacy. There is a lot of time to do the rest, but these rooms are the most important!

-          Arrange flowers, brew a pot of fresh coffee or bake bread. These are all aromas of “home”.

-          Listen to your favourite music while unpacking boxes and arranging the rooms.

-          Once you are settled in, invite friends and family over for a braai if it is summer or a home cooked meal if it is winter.

-          If you have green fingers plant something in the first week. You will take pleasure and pride in seeing it grow and this is a great way of adding your personal touch to the garden right away.
