Category News

If there’s one thing Capetonians can’t get enough of its craft markets, and among the plethora of markets available in the Mother City, Kirstenbosch Craft and Food Market is arguably the best and most beautiful.

Nestled below Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden in the leafy suburb of Newlands, the market hosts over 200 crafters selling a diverse range of crafts including unique jewellery, kids and adults clothing, knitted goodies, handcrafted toys and collectables, bags, handmade soaps, candles, beadwork, sculpture, ornaments, art and garden furniture. There are also a wide range of plants for sale, a second-hand book stall and puppies available for adoption.

The wide variety of delicious food on offer, ranges from local favourites such as boerewors rolls and hamburgers cooked to perfection on the braai, to mouthwatering international delights that include Dutch, German, Greek, Portuguese, Spanish, Ukrainian, Indonesian and Indian cuisine.

Popular favourites are Marga’s poffertjes, bitterballen and kroketten.

And you simply must try Hungry Bear’s egg and bacon breakfasts and 18 hr slow cooked smoked brisket.

There is also biltong, droewors, farm cheese, honey and preserves, artisan chocolate and ice cream, freshly squeezed fruit juices and smoothies, craft beer and wine, homemade lemonade and ginger beer, and freshly brewed coffee available.

Proceeds from stall rentals go to the Development Fund for Kirstenbosch Gardens.

The market is pet and family friendly and offers plenty of space to explore, with a play area for the kids and a magical tea garden beneath the trees, serving tea, coffee, scones, koeksisters and other delectable home baked goods. There is also live music and plenty of shady places to sit and simply enjoy the day.

The market begins at 9am and closes at 3pm and runs annually from October to May, on the last Sunday of the month. There is plenty of parking but it’s best to get there early if you want to get a good spot! Entrance is free.
