Kerzner-branded luxury estate in Cape Town

Category News

Sol Kerzner has teamed up with his daughter Andrea to create a stunning and exclusive new eco-friendly security estate in Leeukoppie, Cape Town.

Andrea will run the overall planning of the project and work with architects and designers. "I’m letting her lead the team," says Kerzner.

"Development is in our blood. We grew up on building sites — we’re interested in it. It’s so exciting to work with him and there’s more to learn," said Andrea, speaking about her father to the Financial Mail.

The 81-year old "Sun King" is the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Kerzner International and his career spans more than 45 years in the resort industry. He founded both of South Africa's largest hotel groups.

Kerzner bought the 10ha Leeukoppie property, nestled between Hout Bay and Llandudno, south of Cape Town, in 1983 for R2.25m.

His latest project will feature 48 bespoke homes, each costing upwards of R20m with en-suite bathrooms for every room. The estate will also offer luxury resort-style services including airport transfers, horse riding lessons, grocery stocking of your house, turn-down and catering services. The plan will included a communal gym and a clubhouse to host large dinner parties using hospitality services such as a Kerzner-trained chef. Houses range from 374m² to 738m².

Measures have been taken to maintain and enhance the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Alien plants have been replaced with fynbos, grey water systems will be installed, and all the houses will be double-glazed to assist with environmental control.

In addition to ensuring that each house is eco-friendly and as sustainable as possible, the Kerzners have also taken into account the local community, including people from nearby township, Imizamo Yethu. In 2010 Andrea founded the non-profit organisation, Lalela, which “provides educational arts for at-risk youth to spark creative thinking and awaken entrepreneurial spirit”.

A certain amount of people from the township have been employed in the construction of the estate with an aim to up-skill and train them for future employment.

Development director for Seeff Atlantic Seaboard, Ross Levin, has said that there has been an overwhelming amount of interest both internationally and from residents of Gauteng.

Seven architectural firms will be involved. They include Dennis Fabian, "who’s been the architect for everything we’ve done at Leeukoppie" as well as Stefan Antoni from the firm ARRCC, Sean Mahoney from studioMAS, Jonathan Jacobs from Metropolis, Sally Tsiliyiannis from Gapp, Ian Gray from Craft of Architecture and Antonio Zaninovic.
