Follow these home fire safety and prevention tips to protect you, your family and your belongings. Ensure that you have an early warning system in place and a fire escape plan.

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and make sure to test them regularly.


  • Have a fire escape plan that you run through with your family.


  • Know the number of your local fire station and save the number on your phone.

  • Never go back inside your home if there is a fire. Get out, stay out and call for help.

  • Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.

  • Never leave candles or your oven unattended. Make sure that you switch your stove off when you're done cooking.

  • Stop, drop and roll if your clothing should catch fire.

  • Never smoke in bed, put your cigarettes out properly and make sure that you clean out your ashtrays regularly.


  • Smother a grease fire by placing a lid over the pan. Never throw water or anything else on a grease fire.


  • Switch your heaters and electric blankets off before going to sleep.


  • Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stove.

  • Don't overload your plug sockets and adapters.

  • Crawl low in smoke and never open a door that is hot to the touch.


  • Keep a working fire extinguisher in your kitchen and garage.
