A brief history of its origins

The roots of the Kowie Museum in Port Alfred can be traced back to the visionary Ted Morse Jones. When the Lower Albany Historical Society was established in July 1958, Jones included the creation of a museum as one of its primary objectives. Inspired by his vision, society members collected materials for this future institution.

In the late 1970s, Iris Holloway chaired the Kowie Museum subcommittee. Their mission was to fulfil Jones' dream. Artefacts and historical items that would later form the foundation of the museum's collection were gathered by them.

It was in July 1980 that Glen Harvey, Chairman of the Society, initiated negotiations with the Posts and Telecommunications Department that talks broke down. After the new Automatic Exchange was built, they secured the use of the existing Manual Telephone Exchange room at the Post Office, which would become the museum's new home.

The Kowie Museum moved into the Post Office in April 1982, and its inaugural exhibit was unveiled on December 15, 1982. Don Monro, the museum's first curator, proved his dedication and relentless energy by achieving this significant milestone.

Since its inception on December 15, 1982, the Kowie Museum has stood as a testament to the unwavering commitment of dedicated volunteers. Established through their tireless efforts, the museum found its first home in a building sold after nearly three decades. In October 2012, the museum moved significantly to the historic Old Railway Station on Station Road, Port Alfred.
