Enjoy exploring Bird Island Nature Reserve

Category Area Focus

Located just 100 metres from Lamberts Bay on the West Coast of the Cape, Bird Island Nature Reserve is an awe-inspiring place to explore. In addition to being the exclusive breeding site for Cape gannets, this tranquil sanctuary is also a paradise for anyone passionate about bird watching or nature. Get to know the island's fascinating flora and fauna, or enjoy the serene scenery.

The island is around three hectares in area, with a breakwater leading to the mainland. Other seabirds, including Cape cormorants and kelp gulls, use it as a breeding ground. Moreover, signs all over the island provide context on the birds found on the western side.

Learn about Cape gannets' breeding habits

Bird Island Nature Reserve is one of only six breeding colonies of Cape gannets, making it a unique destination for birdwatchers. You can learn about the breeding habits and behaviours of these magnificent birds on the island and see a close-up view of their daily activities.

Each year, the Cape gannets return to the same breeding colonies on Bird Island to mate for life. During the breeding season, birds perform a courtship dance, which includes head movements, bill touches, and sky-pointing. They lay a single egg yearly and build their nests using seaweed, grass, and feathers.

Get acquainted with the island's seabirds

Bird Island Nature Reserve is not only a great place to see Cape gannets, but it is also a great place to see other seabirds, including the Cape cormorant and the kelp gull, in addition to Cape gannets. There is a perfect location on the island where you can observe these birds from a hide from which you can watch them in person.

Cape cormorants breed along the coast of southern Africa and are medium-sized seabirds. On rocky islands and cliffs, they are often found in large flocks. A large, white-headed gull is located along the southern coast of Africa known as the kelp gull. They are opportunistic feeders who eat anything from fish and crabs to carrion.

Try out the incredible Bone Box

The Bone Box, as the Walkthrough Museum is commonly called, offers an exciting alternative to birding. The museum features the skeletons of several marine animals and birds, including Cuvier's beaked whales, southern right whales (including one named Polly), dusky dolphins, Cape fur seals, and a variety of other species. The Bone Box is an excellent resource for learning about West Coast marine life.

Birdwatching and investigating the Bone Box aren't the only things to do for fun on the island. Permission to film or photograph in reserve can be secured at the permit bookings counter. There are also curio shops on the island where guests can purchase presents and souvenirs.
