Discover the Birds of Eden in Plettenberg Bay

Category Area Focus

Nestled in the heart of the Garden Route in South Africa, Birds of Eden is a breathtakingly beautiful bird sanctuary that covers over 2.3 hectares of indigenous forest. This unique attraction is located in the town of Plettenberg Bay and is home to a wide variety of exotic birds from all over the world.

Birds of Eden was established in December 2005 with the aim of providing a safe haven for birds that have been displaced from their natural habitats due to deforestation and other environmental factors. The sanctuary is home to over 3,500 birds from more than 200 different species, many of which are endangered.

An interactive and memorable experience

One of the most impressive things about Birds of Eden is its sheer size. The sanctuary is the largest free-flight bird aviary in South Africa and is able to accommodate a wide variety of bird species, including macaws, parrots, flamingos, and owls, to name just a few. You are able to wander through the aviary at your own pace and can even feed some of the birds by hand.

As you walk through Birds of Eden, you'll be amazed at the variety of birds that you'll encounter. The aviary is divided into different sections, each of which is home to birds from a different part of the world. You'll be able to find African birds in one section, South American birds in another, and Asian birds in yet another. This diversity of bird species is what makes Birds of Eden such a unique and special attraction.

One of the most popular sections of the aviary is the parrot sanctuary. Here, you'll find dozens of different types of parrots, including macaws, cockatoos, and African grey parrots. These colourful birds are highly intelligent and social creatures, and many of them will happily interact with visitors. You can even have your photo taken with some of the friendlier birds.

Conservation through rehabilitation and education

Birds of Eden is more than just a bird sanctuary. The attraction is also committed to conservation and education. The sanctuary works with a number of different conservation organisations to promote bird conservation and raise awareness about the threats that birds face in the wild. They also offer educational programs for school groups and other visitors, which help to teach people about the importance of protecting our planet's bird populations.

Rates and operating hours of the sanctuary

The sanctuary is open to the public every day from 08:00 until 17:00. The entry fee for adults is R350 and R175 per child under 12 years old. Children under the age of three are free of charge. There are also combo and triptic tickets available which allow you to make one purchase to visit all three sanctuaries.

Birds of Eden is a truly unique and unforgettable attraction that is well worth a visit. Whether you're a bird lover or simply someone who appreciates natural beauty, you'll find plenty to enjoy at this remarkable sanctuary.
