But did you know that if you head just a little way inland, KZN is home to its very own natural geothermal hot springs? Tucked away in the dramatic folds of the Tugela (Thukela) River Valley lies a truly extraordinary hidden gem: the KwaShushu Hot Springs.
The Magic of KwaShushu
Unlike commercialized hot springs with manicured resorts, KwaShushu (sometimes called Shu-Shu) offers a raw, off-the-grid encounter with nature. The thermal water bubbles straight out of the earth on a natural island situated right in the middle of the mighty Tugela River, near Kranskop.
For over a century, adventurous families have made an annual winter pilgrimage here. Because the river is low and calm during the cooler months, visitors can easily cross over to the island to soak in the natural rock pools, which reach beautifully warm temperatures between 42°C and 46°C. Surrounded by rising steam, dramatic cliffs, and the rushing sound of the river, it’s nature's ultimate spa day.
An Interesting Fact: The water you soak in at KwaShushu is actually ancient history in motion! Geologists have discovered that the water originates from rainfall near the Great South African Escarpment. It seeps deep into the earth—descending over 2 kilometers down where it is heated by the Earth's natural geothermal gradient—before traveling underground for more than 60 years to finally surface on the Tugela island. You are literally bathing in water that fell as rain decades ago!
