What to expect on your whale watching journey

First, you'll start with a brief informative talk on what animals to look out for and the route you will be taking. Each passenger is offered a life jacket but this is not compulsory. You'll then launch from the fishing harbour of Gansbaai and travel along the Cliffs of De Kelders towards the Plaat beach. The trip generally lasts about two hours but can be longer depending on how quickly you find the whales.

A typical trip will have you exploring the magnificent coastline and bay between Gansbaai and Hermanus while looking for whales, dolphins, sharks, seals, penguins and seabirds. Apart from the Southern Right Whales in whale season, you'll be able to view Brydes Whales, Humpback Whales and possibly even Orca and Great White Sharks.

Other animals you will have the chance to see include Cape Fur Seals, African Penguins, Dolphins, Sunfish and plenty of coastal marine birds.

Important information on Ivanhoe Sea Safari's

Whale watching season runs from June to December with August, September and October classified as the main season. At the beginning of the season, trips take place twice a day at 10:00 and again at 13:00.
