6 Tips to survive load shedding

Category Top Property Tips

For nearly 13 years, South Africa has been experiencing the effects of an energy crisis. The chronic rollout of blackouts during power shortages - or load shedding, as we’ve come to know it - has become somewhat of a thorn in the sides of people living in the country. It seems like there’s no immediate end in sight, so the sensible thing is to find backup methods that allow life to continue as normally as possible - even when the lights are out.

Here are a few tips to help you through the next round of dark days.

#1: Download an app that will keep you updated

Load shedding is rolled out according to a schedule, which is posted to the Eskom website. However, having an app on your phone means you also receive notifications and alerts, so you’re always in the loop.

#2: Invest in gas appliances for cooking and warmth

Natural gas is one of the most reliable, accessible and affordable energy sources available. A gas stove and heater will ensure that you don’t miss any meals and stay warm, especially during the nippy months.

#3: Buy a fuel-run generator for alternative power supply

If you’d like to keep the lights on without Eskom electricity, candles or a gas fire, a generator is your best bet. This way, you can continue using laptops for work and charging devices. Bear in mind that these don’t come cheap but it may be worth the initial spend to keep you business going.

#4: Consider a transition to solar power

This isn’t an immediate solution, but one you should consider applying over time. Sustainable energy is a lasting solution that could ensure cheaper power that you won’t have to rely on the national grid for.

#5: Get a surge protection unit to prevent damage to appliances

When the power returns, the constant surges can cause appliance cables to burn up or even cause fires. To avoid incurring extra costs for replacing electronics, you can unplug them whenever the power is gone or plug in a protective unit as a safety measure.

#6: Invest in a power bank or car charger

Make sure you keep your power banks, laptops and mobile phones fully charged so that you can carry on working or playing when the power is out. Car chargers are also super-handy and can be a great back-up when the apps and schedules fail.

Until Eskom finds a sustainable solution, the only way forward is for individuals to find solutions that work for them. These tips will help you flow with the dark tide and feel the pinch a little less.
