4 factors making Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town an icon

Category News

You can place your bets on the fact that Kenilworth is both a great place to call home and one of the Mother City's icons. A big part of the reason for the area's iconic status is Kenilworth Racecourse. For over 140 years, horse racing enthusiasts and bookmakers have been coming to Kenilworth to enjoy a flutter on the horses or simply to enjoy watching the racing action. Seeff takes a look at four reasons why Kenilworth Race Course is so popular.

1. An array of renowned events is hosted throughout the year

A wide range of horseracing events is held at Kenilworth Racecourse throughout the year, and people come from far and wide to see and be seen, as well as to watch the horses. Arguably the best-known event is the Sun Met, which is known as Africa's richest race day. Sun International took over the sponsorship of this glamorous event in 2017 and each year, the day brings world-class entertainment, unforgettable fashion and, of course, nail-biting horse racing action to Kenilworth. Those attending the Sun Met can expect to see themed fashion shows and can take part in a Best Dressed competition. Those who have experienced this event will understand why it's a must on every Cape Town socialite's calendar.

Another big day on the Kenilworth Racecourse calendar is the L'ormarins Queen's Plate Racing Festival. The traditional dress code for this event - which was first held in 1861 - is blue and white, and those attending the event will have access to an array of hospitality options at the racecourse.

2. The racecourse boasts three tracks

As a racecourse, Kenilworth stands out from the crowd because it has three race tracks. The first is an old course with a circumference of 2 700 m and a run-in of 450 m. The second course is a newer one, with a 2 800 m circumference and a 600m run-in. Over and above these, there is a separate 1 200 m straight course. The two circular tracks intersect at certain points and their finish lines are adjacent to each other.

3. There is no better place to host a private or corporate event

If you're looking to host a function - whether it's a wedding, a staff party, a conference or a seminar - Kenilworth Racecourse is a great venue to consider. The 1881 Lounge - recently renamed in honour of the year the first horse race was run on Kenilworth soil - can accommodate up to 250 people. It boasts perfect views of the winning post as well as the nature conservation area. It is situated on the first floor. On the fourth floor, you'll find the Peninsula Room, which can also accommodate up to 250 people. From here, spectacular semi-aerial views of the racecourse can be enjoyed.

4. There is even a conservation area

Kenilworth Racecourse is home to the largest conservation area surrounded by urbanisation in Cape Town's southern suburbs. It is an outstanding example of sand fynbos and has been identified by the Cape Town Biodiversity Network as "irreplaceable". Covering 52 hectares, the conservation area is home to more than 300 plant species as well as various small reptiles, mammals, amphibians and birds. An array of educational and conservation events is hosted here to keep the conservation area well preserved for generations to come.

For residents of Kenilworth, it's hard to imagine life without their beloved Kenilworth Racecourse nearby. It is one of a large number of attractions offered by Cape Town's Southern Suburbs. To find out more about this area - or to find a property to buy or rent - contact Seeff today.
