A brief history of the area

During the late 19th century, Durban residents looking to get away from the heat of the coast started to move inland. Malvern was once four separate residential townships, Malvern, Escombe, Northdene and Moseley. In 1924, the four areas were combined to form the town of Malvern. In 1952, to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne, Malvern received municipality status and changed its name to Queensburgh.

Malvern is a mere 30-minute drive (40,7 km) along the N2 to King Shaka International Airport. Residents wanting to head to the beach can do so via the N3 within 18 minutes (16,7 km) and Durban CBD is only 15,2 km away which is a 15-minute drive.

Malvern has an oceanic climate. The highest average temperature in Malvern is 30°C in February and the lowest is 25°C in July. Malvern experiences approximately 1048 mm of rain each year with December being its wettest month.

Malvern has got some great schools and so you won't need to worry about having to travel a far distance. Though there are no hospitals within Malvern, healthcare is accessible through Life Westville Hospital, Life The Crompton Hospital, City Hospital and Life Chatsmed Garden Hospital. The area has multiple doctor's rooms for you to choose from close by such as Queensburgh Medical Centre, Malvern Clinic, Medical Practice and Wellness Clinic and Medicross Malvern.

Shopping centres

Malvern offers a few shopping centres in and around the area that provide grocery stores, clothing and home stores, electronic stores and more. Residents can find what they're looking for at the Court Yard Shopping Centre, Malvern Centre or the new Southway Mall. Malvern Park Centre is currently under revamp to bring the area its own official Shopping Mall. Should you not find what you're looking for in one of these malls, you can take a 14-minute drive to The Pavilion in Westville which has 285 stores to browse.

Malvern has a variety of places you can grab a bite to eat whether it's a family restaurant, a pub-style restaurant or a fast food joint. You can listen to some live music, play the slot machines or join in for karaoke at Musketeers Pub & Grill and the kids will love the play area at Red Oak Spur Steak Ranch. If it's a quick breakfast or a good cup of coffee you're after, then you can head to Mugg & Bean.
