A brief history of the area

Clarendon is a suburb that forms part of Pietermaritzburg which was founded in 1838. Pietermaritzburg is the capital of KwaZulu-Natal and the second-largest city in the province. 

In 1843, Pietermaritzburg fell under British control, establishing itself as the administrative centre of the Natal Colony. The inaugural lieutenant governor, Martin West, chose Pietermaritzburg as his residence. To accommodate a garrison, Fort Napier was constructed, named after Sir George Thomas Napier, the governor of the Cape Colony. In 1893, Natal gained self-governance, leading to the construction of an assembly building and the city hall in Pietermaritzburg.
