Nigel at a glance

The town of Nigel originated as a gold mining town in the late 1800s. It was named after a book the prospector, Sir Walter Scott, was reading - The Fortunes of Nigel. In 1888 Nigel was declared as a public digging under notice no. 331 and since then the history and development of Nigel are inseparable from those of the gold mines. Until 1923 the town was nothing more than a mining camp. The Sub Nigel mine had, in the meanwhile, come into existence and proved to be the riches gold mine in the world. During the period of 1934 - 1939 saw the most noteworthy development of the town. This was only slowed down by the outbreak of World War II. During those five years, no less than 5 suburbs were proclaimed and speculation in fixed property soared. Although the gold mines has since closed down, the industrial area keeps Nigel's economy viable.

The town of Nigel also boast with enough outdoor venues to satisfy any outdoors enthusiast. The Nigel Dam which is next to Vosterskroon. Nigel Dam has a length of 5.26 kilometres of natural water. The dam is known in the area as the anglers dream spot and is the ideal place for the fishing. The stunning natural scenery makes the area around the dam ideal for hiking. There are also the Ferryvale Parkrun.

There are ample restaurants in the town for instance Picanha which is a steakhouse and bar there is also North Sea which serve fish and chips as well as takeaway venues. Shopping needs are also catered for and Nigel boasts with its own mall the The Angelo Mall as well as Albertsdal Shopping Centre.

The town also have education institutions Secondary School John Vorster, Nigel Primary School, Primary School Hannes Visagie, Alra Park Pre-School, Happiness primary School, and Almac Development Centre.
