Laingsburg is a friendly, modern Karoo town, only 280 km from Cape Town. Laingsburg, initially called Buffelsrivier (Buffalo River), is considered something of a geological wonderland. Running alongside its main road are layers of fossilised mudstone and a yellow bank of volcanic ash purportedly blown across from South America 250 million years ago.
Laingsburg boasts a number of beautifully restored Victorian and Edwardian era buildings many of which have been converted into bed and breakfast establishments. The original Dutch Reformed Church was built in 1883 and is now located behind the present-day NG Kerk, which is a beautiful dressed sandstone building with a brilliant white crenelated steeple.
On 25 January 1981, Laingsburg was devastated by a severe flood. The hard rains immersed the whole town in water, only the roofs of the houses were left visible. At least 100 residents lost their lives and a total of 184 houses were destroyed, leaving only 21 houses standing in Laingsburg.
The Laingsburg Flood Museum provides a fascinating insight to the horrific flood that devastated the town. The museum contains a wide variety of artefacts that relates the history of the town, the district and its people. Close to the museum a signpost indicates the high water mark of the 1981 flood.
But modern-day Laingsburg is far more fun, especially on a weekend. Farmers' markets have become popular, introducing visitors to the local people and the food of the region. If you're staying around or simply passing through, make a point of visiting the Laingsburg Farmers' Market where you can pick up preserves, meats and bakes made locally.
Laingsburg also caters extensively for outdoor enthusiasts. There are a number of hiking trails, including the 24 km Klipkraal route along the crest of the Swartberg and the 16 km Verlorenhoek trail as well as a hike designed specially for bird fanatics at Kraankop farm. Then there's the annual 80 km Karoo Marathon, which passes through some of the most beautiful parts of the area and is regarded as a rather grueling ultra marathon.
