A brief history of the area

Shrouded in history, Howick is the epitome of dark tales, new beginnings and adventures before us. In the 19th century, the British Government allocated land within KwaZulu-Natal. Some of the land was in the form of three farms known as Oatlands, Woodlands and Stocklands that was granted to a Wesleyan missionary, Reverend James Archbell.

It wasn't until November of 1850 that one of the plots was named Howick after the home of the British colonial secretary Earl Grey.
