A brief history of the area

Amber Valley, which was completed in 2011, is located in Howick which was established as a town in 1850 after a proclamation appeared in the Natal Government Gazette, offering 36 village allotments on the Umgeni Waterfall Drift for sale. Government officials named the town after their Secretary of State for the Colonies in London, Earl Grey, who had recently acquired the title of Lord Howick.
