A brief history of the area

The Gates is set in the beautiful Hilton area which was founded as such in 1860. Jane Henderson, the wife of farming pioneer Joseph Henderson, is the one who named the area after Hilton Park in Staffordshire, from which she derived.

Prior to the Henderson family's arrival, in the 1840s, the British Government granted land to the Voortrekker farmers, who became the pioneering settlers. Among the notable early farms established during this period were Groenekloof and Ongegund.
