A brief history of the area

The lovely Leonard area has a great piece of history within the walls of St Anne's Diocesan College which is a private boarding school for girls. 

In 1877, St Anne's Diocesan College was established by the Rt Revd William Macrorie, Bishop of Maritzburg and Miss Creswell. Its initial location was the Manse Building on Pietermaritz Street in Pietermaritzburg. 

The following year, the school was relocated to the intersection of Loop Street and Pine Street in Pietermaritzburg. Finally, in 1904, St Anne's Diocesan College settled in its current village location in Leonard, Hilton and is known today as one of the top schools in the country.

Leonard residents looking to reach Pietermaritzburg Airport can do so in approximately 28 minutes (23,1 km) via the N3 and King Shaka International Airport is a one hour and 24-minute drive (118,3 km) via the N3 as well. Pietermaritzburg Central is 21 minutes away (12,1 km) via Old Howick Road.
