A brief history of the area

Hiltara Park is a component of the Hilton area, which was named after Jane Henderson, the wife of Joseph Henderson, a pioneering farmer in Pietermaritzburg, in 1849. When they initially named their farm Hilton in 1860, it is said that Jane was reminiscing about Hilton Park in her hometown of Staffordshire. The farm was adjacent to Philip Zietsman's Voortrekker farm, known as 'Groenekloof', and served as a route to the early wagon trails.

Hiltara Park residents looking to reach Pietermaritzburg Airport can do so within approximately 27 minutes (24,6 km) via the N3. For international flights, you will need to go to King Shaka International Airport which is an hour and 28-minute drive (119,8 km) via the N3 as well. Pietermaritzburg CBD is 21 minutes (15 km) away via the N3.
