A brief history of the area

Hillcrest has a long history that dates back to the early 1900s. The region was once a dairy farm called Albinia, owned by William Gillitt, who also gave his name to the neighbouring suburb of Gillitts. 

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Hillcrest saw a spike in infrastructural development that transformed the formerly quiet country community into a thriving real estate attraction.

Over the years, the area has continued to grow and attract new residents and is now considered one of the most sought-after residential areas in KwaZulu-Natal.

Almost all year long, Hillcrest residents may enjoy the warm weather. While winter evenings in July and August might be chilly, with lows around 7°C, daytime highs will be about 20°C. During the hottest months of the year, January to March, the temperature routinely soars into the low to mid-30s.

Children at Hillcrest have the option of beginning their educational experience at the Hillcrest Pre-Primary School, moving on to the Hillcrest Primary School, and finally finishing at the Hillcrest High School. 

Highbury Preparatory School, a primary school for boys, and Curro Hillcrest Christian Academy, which serves students of all ages and grade levels, are two private schools in the neighbourhood.

The driving distance from Hillcrest to King Shaka International Airport is approximately 60 km. In average traffic, it will take you about 50 minutes to get there. Durban's CBD is approximately 30 km or a 25-minute drive away.

The Camelot Golf Club, located in the centre of Hillcrest, is a golfer's paradise. The 9-hole course is charming, with peaceful settings, sloping fairways, and meticulously maintained greens to make golfing a pleasure. When players need to refuel with delectable food and beverages, they can go to The Goblet Pub and Restaurant.

Both novice and expert riders love the Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park. It features numerous paths that are well defined, as well as a course of obstacles that includes ramps and bridges. The orange track is twice as long but meanders around the valley, in contrast to the steep, 5-kilometre-long green trail.

Taking a trip on the renowned Inchanga Choo Choo railway is a must-do activity while in Hillcrest.
