A brief history of the area
 
When Hermanus was founded in 1855 as Hermanuspietersfontein, it was centred on the Visbaai and fishing activity. As a result, Westcliff Road was one of the first streets established. Notably, Marine Drive in Westcliff is home to one of the oldest hotels in town. It was the first sanatorium in the late 1800s.
