Hartbeespoort, or "Harties" as the locals fondly call it, is a resort town in South Africa's North West Province, nestled between the Magaliesberg mountain range and the banks of the Hartbeespoort Dam. A brief history of the area
When Hartbeespoort was founded as a community for farmers and merchants in the 19th century, it already had a long and storied past. The town was named for a prominent landowner in the region, a farmer by the name of General Hendrik Schoeman, "Hartbeespoort" means "gateway of the hartbees"(a species of antelope) in Afrikaans. Hartbeespoort Dam, built in 1923, supplied the city with agricultural water and catalysed its rapid expansion into a tourist hotspot.

The trip from Hartbeespoort to Pretoria Central on the N4 is 36 minutes (34,5 km), and from Hartbeespoort to Centurion on the R511 is 37 minutes (38,1 km). Getting to the O.R. Tambo International Airport will take 1 hour and six minutes (93,2 km) via R511 and R21.

The climate of Hartbeespooot is subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters. January is the warmest and wettest month of the year, with an average high temperature of 29°C and 140mm of rain.
