Brits had its origins on the farm Roode Kopjes (Red Hills) in 1924 and was named after the farm owner, Gert Brits. The area was given a boost when Hartbeespoort Dam opened in 1923, supplying farmlands around Brits with water. Brits has also developed as part of South Africa's platinum belt. Together with Rustenburg, it produces more platinum than any other single area in the world.
