Benoni, known as the City of Lakes, is situated in the East Rand of Johannesburg. The area is great for those who love the outdoors and offers various spots for picnicking and quiet fishing at one of the multiple lakes. Benoni is also the birthplace of world-renowned celebrities, including actress Charlize Theron, boxer Brian Mitchell, and rugby player Bryan Habana. A brief history of the area
Benoni was once called "Little Cornwall" after gold was discovered and the Chimes Mine was established by Cornishmen in 1887. In 1906, thousands of trees were planted and it was declared the township of Benoni. Before its close in 1946, Benoni Flying Field was where South African air force pilots trained for World War Two with aircrafts such as Tiger Moths, Hornet Moths, Rearwin 7000, Harts, Audaxes and Harvards stationed.
Distance from key points
Benoni is a mere 23,1 km (19 minutes) away from O.R. Tambo International Airport via the N12. Residents looking to travel to Johannesburg's CBD can do so via the N12 as well and will take approximately 34 minutes (37,4 km) to reach their destination.

In Benoni, the summers are long, warm, and partly cloudy and the winters are short, cold, dry, and clear. In January, the temperature averages 19.8 °C and is the warmest month of the year while July is the coldest with an average temperature of 9.7 °C.
Schools in the area
With so many schools in and around Benoni to choose from, there are plenty of options to give your children the best education. Primary schools that top the list include Arbor Primary School, Benoni West Primary School, Crystal Park Primary School and Farrarmere Primary School. For the older kids, you should have a look at Benoni High School, Willowmoore High School, Wordsworth High School and Hoërskool Hans Moore.
