Tokoza at a glance

Thokoza is located in the Gauteng province of South Africa, southeast of Alberton and is adjacent to Katlehong. Thokoza, also known as Tokoza, is a small town with a population of 106,000 people and stands in place of the now-defunct Palmietfontein Airport. The area provides a family-orientated outlook with a strong sense of community and rural charm. A brief history of the area

In 1955, a land exchange occurred between the Germiston and Alberton municipalities, resulting in the latter gaining a portion of the Natalspruit area. This land was essential for the creation of a new township. Beginning in 1958 and continuing through 1959, the Alberton municipality initiated the development of this new township within the Palmietfontein section.

The development plan aimed to provide each plot with essential water and sewerage infrastructure, alongside the construction of one-bedroom units and subsequently, one, two and three-bedroom houses. This emerging community was officially named "Thokoza," a Zulu phrase that translates to "place of peace." Thokoza was formally established as a township in 1973.

Thokoza residents looking to reach O.R Tambo International Airport can do so in 47 minutes (36,6 km) via the N3 and Lanseria International Airport is a one hour and 22-minute drive (68,5 km) via the N1 Western Bypass. Johannesburg is 39 minutes away (29,5 km) via Francois Oberholzer Freeway.

The climate in Thokoza is considered warm and temperate with an average annual temperature of 15.9 °C. January is noted as the warmest month of the year with an average temperature of 19.7 °C while July is the coldest month with an average temperature of 9.5 °C. The month that receives the most rainfall is December with an average value of 136 mm of precipitation.
