The Canals, then called the Marina Glades, was a major project started by Leighton Hulett, after he exchanged a house and a plot for 179 morgen land with 2.3km river frontage. A dredger was bought and the work on the first canal started in 1960. The Cove, which leads directly to the river mouth, was the starting point of the canals.
