One of the interesting historical buildings in Heidelberg is the Hotel Heidelberg which is a familiar landmark in the town. Though renovated in 1932 – the date on the gable – it is thought that the building is at least 100 years old, a claim borne out by its old wooden beams and unusual staircase. The pillars that now support the first floor of the building replaced wrought-iron posts, while the bar on the side was built in place of the old horse stables. This beautiful double storey hotel built on the street as was the custom in the far away days, is in use even today. The Hotel Heidelberg has 14 double and single rooms all equipped with en-suite bathrooms. There is a restaurant and bar, and a cooked meal (boerekos) on Sundays.
The town of Heidelberg dates back to 1855 and was named after the German city of the same name, built similarly on the banks of a river. In 1903, Heidelberg became a vital transport hub with the arrival of the railway network, facilitating the movement of wool, wheat, fruit, and tobacco from the surrounding areas. It is now part of the greater Hessequa municipality and is regarded as the western gateway to the Garden Route, midway between the towns of Riversdale and Swellendam on the N2. This small town in the Western Cape is probably one of the most beautiful towns on the N2 with wonderful old houses and an amazing history that comes alive when you go for a walk in it’s streets. It is a wonderful walk, with lei-water (irrigation) streams, the town is still mostly untouched and safe with friendly people. The town is known for its beautiful, peaceful, and largely unexplored natural surroundings, including the Duiwenhoks River and the Langeberg mountains. Heidelberg is a destination for nature lovers and offers various local attractions and businesses, such as art studios, restaurants, and nurseries.
