Selling in winter

Category News

With winter and the wet weather now fast setting in, many potential sellers may think that it is better to hold off on selling until the summer months return. While it is true that people spend more time indoors in winter, it also means that they have more time on their hands and, many will take the opportunity to look online for their ideal home.

You would therefore not want to miss out. It is generally economics rather than inclement weather that keeps buyers away.

Regardless of the economy and weather, people still need places to stay and they may need to buy for a range of reasons from a new job to a growing family. Many also want to get their Offers to Purchase accepted over winter so that they can spend December in their new home.

Here’s why selling in winter makes perfect sense:

Less competition – during the summer months, there is usually a flurry of property listings and the competition can be fierce and you could easily find three or four similar properties to your own on the market. With fewer people selling during winter, you naturally will face less competition.

Serious buyers – buyers who take the time to shop around for a property during the winter months are generally serious about buying and that means that you are likely to get a better and more serious offer than what you would have received otherwise.

Market recovery – with signs of a market recovery, we could expect a steady increase in the number of buyers over the coming months and, the only way to attract buyers and get an offer, is to have your property on the market.

Finally, remember that appearance matters. Given that winter can bring many overcast and gloomy days, homes can appear somewhat duller. It is therefore important to ensure that your property is as neat, bright and airy as in summer. It should always be in the best possible condition and be warm and inviting when buyers come around to see the property because they need to envision themselves in your home.
