Raapenberg Bird Sanctuary

Category News

Relax, unwind and take time out to learn more about Cape Town's beautiful flora and fauna at the Raapenberg Bird Sanctuary.

The Raapenberg Bird Sanctuary is a bird lover's paradise in the heart of Observatory. The sanctuary is an important breeding site for various species of duck and attracts beautiful local water birds such as sacred ibis, Egyptian geese, herons, coots and seagulls.

The 10-hectare area is perfect for walking, birdwatching and sunny afternoon picnics with plenty of shady trees and sprawling lawn. The Liesbeek River is terribly polluted unfortunately but is currently being rehabilitated for recreational activities, to control alien vegetation, and create walkways along the rivers.

To get involved join the Friends of The Liesbeek or donate to the organisation by visiting their official website.

The sanctuary makes up part of the Two Rivers Urban Park (TRUP) and is managed by the City of Cape Town. The park includes sporting facilities, such as Hartleyvale, Malta Park and the River Club. You are also able to visit the surrounding provincial heritage sites close by such as the SA Astronomical Observatory, the Courtyard Hotel (originally the Valkenberg Homestead), Valkenberg Hospital, the Nieuwe Molen windmill and the Oude Molen farmhouse complex.
