Newlands Stadium

Category News

The Newlands Stadium, also known as DHL Newlands, has a capacity of almost 52 000 people and is the oldest rugby stadium in South Africa and the second-oldest rugby stadium in the world.

The ground where the stadium stands was bought by the Western Province and Football Union in 1888. Today this historic stadium is home to both the Stormers and Western Province.

It is regarded as one of the best rugby grounds in the world with its intimate seating, beautiful views and fantastic atmosphere.

In unfortunate news however, DHL Newlands could be saying goodbye to international rugby as the Western Province Rugby Football Union has to put the grounds on the market and move to Cape Town Stadium in Greenpoint. This is due to a multi-million rand lawsuit that was brought against the union in 2016.

Newlands Stadium will always hold a special place in the hearts of South Africans. It was, after all, the stadium where the famous 1995 Rugby World Cup kicked off.
