International Profile: Mauritius

Category International Profiles

Shaped like a slightly squashed pear, Mauritius is only some 40 miles long from north to south and about 30 wide. The island is almost totally ringed by a coral reef which is the key to its success as a tourist destination - the reef keeps out the sometimes wild seas of the Indian Ocean and allows calm, turquoise lagoons to form natural warm swimming pools along the edges of shimmering swathes of sand.

The inland scenery is pleasantly rural with sugar-cane plantations often stretching as far as the eye can see, but always with a dramatic backdrop of steep, verdant hills of dolomitic appearance which stand out that much more sharply because of the flatness of the plateau itself. Their jagged ridges, peppered with spiky peaks, give the island its character, though they are not (so far) exploited for walkers except to a small extent in the extreme south.

The coral reefs are virtually continuous along the North and East coasts, but there are stretches of the south coast, and some parts of the west just south of Port Louis, where the ocean actually meets the shore. The hill country of the South West corner is the most wild and rugged on the island and includes its main nature reserve.

Mauritius is the most cosmopolitan island in the sun. It is a crucible of diverse cultures and religions. The various population movements of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries have made Mauritius a unique blend of different races, cultures and religions. People of European, African, Indian and Chinese origins have created a multiracial society where the various cultures and traditions flourish in peace and harmony.

In Black River is found the authentic village of Tamarin; the houses and villas are almost the same and the people are as open and friendly than they were 40 years ago.

Seeff Properties is found in the village of Grand Baie. Grand Bay is a holiday village situated on the north coast of the island , overlooking the turquoise blue ocean, and is within a minute walk of the public beach, banks, a myriad of shops, restaurants and eating places, bus-stop, taxi stand, supermarket, water sports and tour facilities. Its unusual concept, style and décor create the pampered atmosphere most people look for during their holidays. Grand Baie's splendid beaches, its deep and sheltered bay as large as a huge lake, is the main tourist resort on the Island and has rightly been named the Mauritian Côte d'Azur.
