Fairland is an older suburb in Johannesburg and its 18 square kilometres falls into an area that was once the farm known as Weltevreden, which extended roughly between Randburg and Roodepoort.
The original farm was allocated to three men in 1861- Cornelis Johannes Smit and two cousins, RG Badenhorst and HJJ Badenhorst. Smit died in 1891 and his son, also Cornelis Johannes, inherited 500 acres of land, which later became the suburb of Fairland. The Weltevreden Farm remained in the same family for 131 years.
Today, excellent English and Afrikaans schools and colleges as well as a good security infrastructure attract a wide age range of residents, especially young families, to the secure and attractive suburb of Fairland.
Fairland lies at the base of the northern slope of Northcliff Hill, which affords it a certain level of protection from wind and other elements. The suburb is not far from several of the city’s ‘green lungs’ - the Boschkop Nature reserve in Boskruin, Emmarentia Dam and the Johannesburg Botanic Gardens are all within easy reach.
Fairland has relatively large family homes with big well-treed gardens, many with swimming pools and tennis courts. Freestanding homes are generally on large, flat stands, ranging from 1,500m2 to 5,949m2. There are several small but beautiful parks in the area including the well-known Fairland koppie.
Freestanding modern clusters are also available in Fairland and there are several large upmarket security estates such as Brooklands, Ambersfield and Fairlands Estate. There are also a small number of townhouse and apartment developments.
Fairlands has good infrastructure with most amenities and is conveniently located - the N1 highway passes Fairland on the north-west side with two off ramps. The area has easy access to 14th Avenue, Beyers Naude Drive, the Johannesburg CBD, Randburg, Sandton, University of Witwatersrand and University of Johannesburg.
Fairland borders Northcliff, Berario, Cresta, Darrenwood and Weltevreden Park and is close to Cresta Shopping centre, one of Johannesburg’s major retail landmarks, which also boasts a large Virgin Active gym.
The recent addition of new eco-friendly buildings for FNB and MTN’ near the highway has further increased the popularity of the pretty Fairlands suburb, which has a good security infrastructure and a community commitment to preventing crime.
Some of the areas surrounding Fairland have experienced significant commercial growth, which has created a dramatic increase in the demand for residential properties in the Fairlands area. This factor has played a positive role in ensuring the above average growth experienced in the Fairland property market.
Seeff Properties Randburg has a wide range of sale or rental properties in this sought after upmarket area – with a good selection of Fairland houses and freehold or sectional title apartments, cluster developments, townhouses and guesthouses.
Fairland is a well-balanced suburb offering something for all age groups. It is conveniently situated in a naturally established environment and its central location allows family members to work and travel to almost any suburb in Johannesburg.
