There is an actual suburb of Fourways, known as 'Fourways proper', which is a small residential suburbia, but most people know Fourways as the grouping of suburbs in Johannesburg's northern region. Encompassing the illustrious estates of Steyn City and Dainfern to the north, and Lonehill and Douglasdale to the south of the Fourways area; Johannesburgers generally know the Sandton / Fourways border to be the N1 highway.
Fourways got its name from the four-way stop at the intersection of Witkoppen Road and William Nicol Drive (a junction that many residents still remember!) While some homes were built in the early 1900s, the biggest expansion in residential property in Fourways has happened over the last two to three decades.
Fourways Gardens residential estate was the first gated community of its kind in Johannesburg. Many other estates in Fourways followed on - Dainfern, Cedar Lakes and Steyn City being the latest. These estates have been popular with families because of the village-style lifestyle, but also, with international expat tenants because of the high security features of the estates.
Trendy apartments, built by savvy developers have made Fourways popular with millennials and Generation Y. Usually with clubhouses, gyms, restaurants and other cool features, these apartment complexes have flats and townhouses in differing sizes, and usually from price points of around R800 000.
Beautiful family homes on large stands can be found in Fourways communities like Lonehill, a suburb that remains a solid investment decades on. The estate homes are always sought-after.
Top schools, such as Crawford, Dainfern College (private) and Fourways High School (public), as well as state-of-the-art medical facilities such as Fourways Life Hospital make Fourways attractive to families. Nearby Douglasdale Retirement Village is a magnificent setting for those looking to slow their pace.
There is no shortage of entertainment options in Fourways - Monte Casino, Cedar Square, Fourways Mall and Fourways Crossing are major centers. You should also look into the billion-Rand re-development termed the 'Fourways Precinct'. If looking for something more chilled - the ever-popular Fourways Farmers Market is something to enjoy (as seen on the new television series Siba's Adventures Johannesburg).
