De Aar, a beautiful town in the heart of the Karoo in the Northern Cape, with a population of 40 000, is the biggest town in this region. The name "De Aar" means vein and it is relevant to the town as it has a solid "vein" of underground of water supply.
De Aar is also the second biggest Railway junction in South Africa and has one of the biggest ammunition depots in the world. The region holds many world and local paragliding records and for the adrenaline junkies there is a local paragliding school which offers courses and tandem flights. Brandfontein Farm, just outside De
