Vredenburg at a glance
Vredenburg is a fast growing little town, 145 km from Cape Town by way of the R27. Vredenburg is considered as the business centre of the West Coast due to its centralised location. It is situated 12 km from Saldanha, 12 km from Jacobsbay, 28 km from Langebaan, 37 km from Hopefield, 25 km from Veldrift (Port Owen & Laaiplek), 15 km from Paternoster and 24 km from St. Helena Bay. The town had its origin some 130+ years ago as a gathering place for local farmers. At one stage Vredenburg was called Twisfontein due to two farmers who had a prolonged row over a natural fountain, still situated in Vredenburg. When these two farmers made their peace, some years later, it was decided by the community to re-name the town to Vredenburg (old Dutch / Afrikaans translated as “Town of peace”).
Are you tired of standing in long queues, traffic jams and millions of people who invade your personal space? Then come visit Vredenburg and see how a person should live. This town offers a variety of leisure activities such as fishing for kabeljou (cob), hottentot, elf (shad / bluefish) and stumpnose which is the most abundant local saltwater fish along the coast. There are a few great freshwater and flyfishing locations and deep sea charters. The area has various hiking trails at Tieties Bay ( near Paternoster), Trekoskraal (just outside Vredenburg) and along the Bergriver. The area also offers wonderful birdwatching facilities as well as horsebackriding and –trails. The little airfield, between Vredenburg and Saldanha, is large enough for most private aircraft and is very popular with the micro light aircraft pilots.
This rustic little town would surprise anyone with all its modern facilities, shops and industry. In the last couple of years the town has grown considerably due to large industry such as Saldanha Steel, Duferco , Namakwa Sands and the Saldanha Harbour. The harbour in Saldanha is the second largest in South Africa and the deepest natural harbour in South Africa. This fact has attracted various large overseas companies such as Ferro Marine Africa who reported that they will be building an oil tanker and –drill repair facility in Saldanha. This means, our area is growing, but not on your front lawn!
Living in Vredenburg / Saldanha is not just something you write as a address, it is a different way of living.
