Tzaneen Rural at a glance

The town of Tzaneen has been described as a subtropical paradise nestled amongst the majestic Wolkberg mountain range, with the Tzaneen dam, on the northeastern edge of the town, as its dominating feature. Tzaneen boasts a variety of recreational and scenic activities.

The name Tzaneen has three possible origins namely "Tzaneng" which means "happy land", or it was the name of a local African tribe, or 'Tsana" referring to a round fruit basket and it describes the town as the fruit basket of the Limpopo Province, surrounded by mountains.

The internationally famous, Kruger National Park is only a scenic hour's drive away. The town is situated within 100km of three major airports that have daily flights to the OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg.

Tzaneen has an above-average annual rainfall of 1200 mm and very moderate winters which ensure the prolific growth of nuts, avocados, mangoes, bananas, litchis, and all citrus fruits and vegetables. The mountain slopes surrounding Tzaneen are heavily forested with timber plantations of blue gum and pine, as well as natural indigenous forests. As can be expected the main business focus of the town is agriculture and as the second biggest town in the Limpopo Province many regional and municipal government services are based here.

Tzaneen produces about 40% of South Africa's avocados, 40% of South Africa's mangoes and 20% of South Africa's bananas.  Tzaneen also produces 90% of South Africa's tomatoes] through the ZZ2, and other, farms making South Africa the world's 40th largest tomato producer. Even though South Africa is ranked 40th in terms of tomato production, the ZZ2 farms themselves are the world's biggest producers of tomatoes. Tzaneen is also the biggest producer of pine plantations in the Limpopo Province, accounting for more than 85% of Limpopo's pine and bluegum production. The majority of Tzaneen's tropical indigenous forests have been destroyed during the last 100 years in order to give way to pine, bluegum and other agricultural plantations.

The economy of Tzaneen depends largely on farming fruits, vegetables, animals and timber. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of Tzaneen, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that nurtured its development. Water boreholes are common in Tzaneen farms and households as a means to water crops and for household chores.

A wide range of fruit is grown in the Tzaneen area, notably mangoes, bananas, oranges, tomatoes and avocados. Pine and eucalyptus plantations are also a common sight in the area around the town, particularly toward Modjadjiskloof, Magoebaskloof and Haenertsburg. The plantations serve a number of sawmills located in the area.

Tzaneen offers home buyers, property and real estate investors a wide variety of homes to choose from, be it a magnificent home overlooking the Tzaneen dam or a piece of tranquil paradise in the bush.
